  17.     This is one of a series of font disks which are intended to supplement
  18.     the fonts packages 'Fontkit' and 'Fontkit Plus'.  Fontkit is a PD
  19.     collection of fonts and font programs, including a simple font editor
  20.     and a font-loading accessory called 'Fontsel', and Fontkit Plus is an
  21.     enhanced version of Fontkit which contains a more powerful font editor
  22.     and an improved font-loading accessory called 'Fontswitch'.

  24.     Fonts in Fontpac 6 may be downloaded onto Epson LQ printers and
  25.     compatible printers (such as the NEC 24-pin series and Star LC10-24
  26.     printers) using either Fontsel or Fontswitch.  Most of the printer fonts
  27.     on this disk contain 95 characters from ASCII 32 to ASCII 126, and can
  28.     be used without modification on most 24-pin printers.  However, a few
  29.     printers - such as the Star LC10-24 - cannot download this many
  30.     characters (the Star LC10-24 cannot download more than 50 characters
  31.     unless an optional RAM card is fitted).  If your printer falls into this
  32.     category you will need to edit the fonts on this disk to reduce the
  33.     number of characters in each font.  Please note that the current
  34.     versions of Fontkit and Fontkit Plus are unable to edit proportional
  35.     24-pin fonts (Q1 fonts).  However, registered Fontkit Plus users can
  36.     obtain a more recent Beta version which is able to do this by sending
  37.     £1.00 with a blank disk and SAE to:

  44.     Fontpac 6 also contains a few fonts with more than 95 characters.  These
  45.     are identified by the letter L ('long font') after the font prefix: for
  46.     example Q1LBKMAN.FON contains a complete set of Atari metacharacters in
  47.     addition to a standard set of ASCII characters.  If your printer is
  48.     able to download 224 characters from 32 to 255 you can use this font to
  49.     print out any of the characters in the Atari screen font (except for
  50.     control characters from 0 to 31).  This removes the need to use printer
  51.     translation tables to switch between different printer fonts (see
  52.     below).  Another font of the same type is Q1LBHBGK.FON, which matches
  53.     the Hebrew/Greek screen fonts in the A1_FONTS and A2_FONTS folders.  Q1L
  54.     fonts have been tested on a NEC P6+ printer, and should be usable with
  55.     other printers which have large downloadable font buffers (check your
  56.     printer manual if you are uncertain - most printers cannot download more
  57.     than 95 characters).  On the P6+ (and P7+) you will need to configure
  58.     Print Mode parameter 7 for a single set of 256 downloadable characters:
  59.     see page 4-11 of the printer manual.

  61.     Since Q1L fonts do not require translation tables you should avoid
  62.     clicking on the Translate button in Fontswitch's Printout option, and
  63.     you should also switch off or disable any translation facility which is
  64.     provided by your wordprocessor before using these fonts.  See below for
  65.     instructions on doing this with First Word and First Word Plus.

  70.     *  PLEASE NOTE that before attempting to download fonts you should    *
  71.     *  check that your printer buffer is configured to accept downloaded  *
  72.     *  fonts, and that it is in Epson mode rather than some other mode    *
  73.     *  (such as IBM mode).  Please consult your printer manual about this *
  74.     *  and make sure your printer is switched off before altering any     *
  75.     *  dip switches.                                                      *

  77.     *  If you you use First Word or First Word Plus you will probably     *
  78.     *  want to edit your printer driver to disable the line which says    *
  79.     *  '21, 1B, 40', so as to prevent downloaded fonts from being erased  *

  86.     Atari metacharacter fonts
  87.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  89.     These can be used in conjuntion with Fontsel or Fontswitch to print all
  90.     of the foreign and scientific characters from the standard Atari meta-
  91.     character set.  To make use of these fonts you should load one of the
  92.     accompanying translation tables (EP_ATARI.TRS or IB_ATARI.TRS) from the
  93.     Printout dialog or use Fconfig to install it as the default table.
  94.     Then, before you print a document containing these characters, download
  95.     Q2_ATARI.FON and click on 'Translate' (DO NOT click on the downloaded
  96.     font).  If you are using First Word or First Word Plus you will need to
  97.     disable the character translation table used by these programs; you can
  98.     do this by editing your printer's HEX file and putting an asterisk in
  99.     front of the translation equivalents for characters from 128 upwards. 
  100.     Then use INSTALL.PRG to create a new printer driver from the modified
  101.     HEX file.  Alternatively, you can use INSTALL.PRG to install
  102.     EPSONLQ2.HEX in place of your existing driver.

  104.     The IB_ATARI.TRS file provides Atari metacharacters for printers which
  105.     have an IBM character set (eg NEC printers).  Use EP_ATARI.TRS instead
  106.     of IB_ATARI.TRS if your printer does not have an IBM character set, or
  107.     requires you to be in a special IBM mode to use this set.

  109.     Foreign/scientific fonts
  110.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  112.     Fontpac 6 also contains screen and printer fonts for typing and
  113.     printing Hebrew and Greek, or mathematical symbols.  These can be used
  114.     in conjunction with Fontswitch from Fontkit Plus.  To make use of these
  115.     fonts you should use FCONFIG.PRG to configure Fontswitch so that the
  116.     relevant keyboard table (*.MSH file) and character translation table
  117.     (*.TRS file) is installed (alternative tables can also be loaded from
  118.     disk as required), and copy the relevant screen font(s) into a 'fonts'
  119.     folder (a folder named 'fonts') on a boot disk which also contains a
  120.     copy of Fontswitch.  Screen fonts may then be selected from
  121.     Fontswitch's screen font selector, and the associated printer fonts may
  122.     be used in conjunction with Fontswitch's character translation facility
  123.     to provide the necessary printer characters (see Fontkit Plus manual
  124.     for details).  If you are using First Word or First Word Plus you will
  125.     need to disable the character translation table used by these programs:
  126.     put an asterisk in front of translation equivalents for characters
  127.     from 128 upwards in your printer's HEX file, and then use INSTALL.PRG
  128.     to install the modified HEX file.  Alternatively, use INSTALL.PRG to
  129.     install EPSONLQ2.HEX in place of your existing printer driver).

  131.     There is a more extensive selection of foreign and scientific fonts on
  132.     Fontpac 8.  This includes screen and 24-pin fonts and tables for most
  133.     European languages, along with Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, and Syriac,
  134.     with Armenian scheduled for inclusion in the near future.

  136.     Additional notes on Hebrew/Greek fonts
  137.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  139.     1. The Hebrew/Greek fonts supplied on this disk are new versions which
  140.     are significantly different from the Hebrew/Greek fonts supplied with
  141.     Fontkit Plus.  If you have been using the old versions you can convert
  142.     existing documents to use the screen new fonts by using HBGK.CFL (on
  143.     this disk) in conjunction with CFILT.TOS from the Fontkit Plus
  144.     Accessory Pack.

  146.     2. The two Hebrew/Greek keyboard tables (HBGK1.MSH and HBGK2.MSH) are
  147.     identical except that HBGK1.MSH contains lunate Sigma while HBGK2.MSH
  148.     has separate medial and final Sigmas - use whichever you prefer.
  149.  
  150.     3. The IB_HBGK.TRS file provides Hebrew/Greek character translation for
  151.     printers which have an IBM character set (eg NEC printers).  If your
  152.     printer does not have an IBM character set, or requires you to be in a
  153.     special IBM mode to use this character set, you should use EP_HBGK.TRS
  154.     instead.

  156.     Proportional fonts
  157.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  159.     Proportional printer fonts (Q1 fonts) can be used with any
  160.     wordprocessor, but give best results with wordprocessors which use
  161.     character width tables to calculate how many characters can be fitted
  162.     on each line (wordprocessors which do this include Final Word, Protext,
  163.     and Word Perfect).  If your wordprocessor does offer this facility you
  164.     can use Fontkit Plus's List Widths option to generate width tables
  165.     which can be then copied or edited.  If your wordprocessor does not
  166.     have a width table facility (First Word and First Word Plus do not) you
  167.     can still use proportional fonts, so long as you switch off
  168.     justification and type around 78 characters to the line (or slightly
  169.     less with lines containing a large number of uppercase letters).
